Welcome to history of the Canaan Fire Company Inc.
The Canaan Fire Company was organized May 9, 1911. The first equipment consisted of two hose jumpers made from an old parade wagon. A 40-Gallon chemical tank was added the same year. In 1917, the first motor unit was used by the company. This consisted of a second hand chassis equipped with two 35 gallon chemical tanks and a body manufactured by the company members.
In 1920, the company was incorporated and moved into an old store which stood between the present locations of Salisbury Bank & Trust Co. and the Connecticut Power Company. In 1923, the second motor unit was added, the first to carry a pump and a booster tank. The body and racks of this truck, also, were built by company members.
In 1927, the fire house was built, largely through the efforts of the late G.M. Brewer and fellow members. The third unit was acquired in 1930 the REO truck 4 which we still use today for parades and special occasions. A panel truck was purchased in 1935 and was made possible by a bequest from the estate of the late H.B. Ives.
In 1975 the Canaan Fire company moved to it's current location at the intersection of Rte 44 and Rte 7. This is the site we currently provide service and protection to the residents of Canaan.
